Why Restrict Agents from Making Gifts to Themselves?

If agents are authorized to make gifts to themselves, then the question arises whether this creates a general power of appointment in the agent. If it does, and the agent dies while holding that power, then all of the principal’s assets would be included in the agent’s estate1, potentially creating an estate tax issue.
